Today is the day of rare diseases: "Living with a disease"

More rare than a February 29, these are the diseases that this year have to remember worldwide today, the last day of the month of February. Rare Disease Day is celebrated and the motto for 2015 is "Living with a disease", as we can see in this beautiful video of body shadows.

This year, a tribute has been wanted to the patients, relatives and caregivers who are affected by a rare disease, because they all live with the disease and this is a challenge. The slogan "Day by day, side by side" encourages solidarity between families, patient organizations and communities.

Created and coordinated by the European Organization for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS) and organized with National Alliances around the world, the Rare Disease Day campaign sensitizes the general public, politicians, public authorities, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, medical professionals ...

It is a relatively recent celebration (it has been done since 2008) that does not stop growing and that has more and more repercussion in the media, as we will surely see throughout the day.

Diseases are considered "rare" according to different criteria in different parts of the world. In Europe, for example, it is considered "rare" to a disease that affects 1 in 2000 people (barely 0.05 of the population). In U.S.A. This defines a disorder or disease that suffers less than 200,000 people, while in Japan it affects less than 50,000.

Day by day, side by side, patients, families and organizations join forces to face the complex nature of rare diseases, find common solutions to overcome limited access to treatments and services.

I hope you like it the video dedicated to rare diseases 2015 and that the whole society is a little more aware of what these diseases, rare, but real.
