I appreciate your opinions, but my daughter will continue going backwards

I have had this article hanging around my head since my daughter turned her first year of age. Now he is about to turn three in just over a month and I think it's a good time to share them.

The issue of car seats is one of the ones that interests me most in terms of child safety issues. And as a defender of its correct use, I have had to go through small discussions with some people who don't think that my daughter still goes with the chair "upside down".

The advice will always be appreciated

I like it when people take the trouble to give me some advice that they think can help me and my daughter. Although my daughter is older or I have twenty more children (well, not many), I will always appreciate any advice you can provide.

But also I like to be an informed mom. We live in an era in which technology puts a lot of information within our reach that we didn't have before. I find it amazing how every day we discover more and more things that help our motherhood to take it in a conscious, informed and responsible way.

Unfortunately, although the information is posted everywhere, there are still issues that remain unknown to many people. And it is precisely that lack of information that sometimes turns a well-intentioned comment or advice, into something that could be uncomfortable and even annoying.

The chair up to 4 years

A couple of months before my daughter turned her first year, I began to investigate to know what the chair that we would use later should be like, since the one she had and which is like an egg, it was small (we are quite tall in the family).

That's when I discovered that traveling backwards is safer and that children should continue to ride in the car for at least two years. Some time later I learned that experts recommend that they go backwards until they are 4 years old.

However, due to the lack of information that I tell you, many fathers and mothers get very excited when their baby turns their first year because they believe that the time has come to turn their seat and that their child can go in the direction of the march . For some reason we think that by the age of one year "he is no longer a baby", however his body is still very small and delicate.

What to do when you insist on turning it?

After comparing several models I finally chose one that "met the 3 b", as we say in Mexico: good, beautiful and cheap. It could be used both counter-clockwise and in the sense of it, it was not too giant or cumbersome and cost us about $ 150 less than other models that simply had more ornaments or cup holders. I met all the necessary requirements for my daughter to travel safely and comfortably and that was the most important.

When we installed it, some people noticed how we had placed their seat and there came a list of comments and questions that I had to hear on many occasions:

  • Why do you bring it backwards?
  • Turn it over, it's already a year old.
  • Poor thing, you bring her there suffering.
  • Look how he has his legs "throw ball."
  • Do you always wear it like that?
  • How bad you are, you leave her alone back there.
  • Turn it over so you can see them, you're sure to be afraid to leave like this.
  • It barely fits, and put it as it should go.
In Babies and more Traveling backwards reduces the risk of serious injury by accident by 90 percent

And I could easily quote more phrases like these. I must admit that at first I felt attacked. Every time I explained the reason they looked at me like I was crazy and felt very depressed. I got to wonder if I was exaggerating or was too paranoid. But over time I understood that simply not all people know this information, so I took another stance on it.

I set out to be patient and not take personal things. I would kindly explain to anyone who wanted to know more about the subject and would not let the opinions of the people who criticized my decision affect me, which I knew was well founded.

In the end, who truly knows and knows what is best for a child is his own mother. Let us be informed mothers, exercise motherhood in a responsible way and whenever we can share knowledge. And about unsolicited opinions and advice? Let's listen, thank and make the decision we deem appropriate.
