Nothing more important than witnessing the birth of a child

I read in the news that a controversy has been created around the decision of soccer player Xabi Alonso not to participate in a match for accompanying his wife at the birth of her first child.

It is suggested that the Liverpool coach would not have supported the player in his election, although the Professional Association of Footballers has expressed that Alonso's situation is "completely understandable."

It is worth that the match is an important match (Liverpool-Inter for the second round of knockout of the Champions League, for information of football players), but not even if it was the World Cup final.

Is there anything more important in life than witnessing the birth of a child?

I want to believe that all parents think not, just as for women it is not the same to give birth alone than in the company of our partner.

At least Xabi has had the opportunity to choose. There are many other parents who do not have that possibility and who cannot be at that important moment with their wife and child.

Unfortunately, the scale of priorities of society falters, sometimes making a work trip more important than the birth of a child. They could start to change things if it were understood that the role of the father in childbirth is fundamental, that it is not a mere expectant and that it is a wonderful experience. If not, read these stories told by the parents themselves.

From here, congratulations to parents that whatever happens choose to be there and a big hug to those who love but really can not be.
