Protection factors against childhood depression

Protective factors reduce the likelihood of childhood depression in the presence of vulnerability factors or activation of this disorder. Recall that there are multiple family and environmental risk factors for childhood depression, as well as individual factors.

In the presence of these risks, there are certain protection factors. Some are intrinsic to the child and cannot act on them, but for most parents and the environment can be decisive and favor these factors:

  • Good sense of humor. In a friendly and happy environment, the child is more likely to share these feelings and more complicated to develop depression.
  • Good friendship relationships. Children gradually expand their affections, and we can accompany them in this development.

  • Close relationships with one or more family members The positive and stable affective bonds that develop from the first moments of life must continue to be cultivated.

  • Personal achievements socially valued. In this regard, we can support our children valuing their small advances and try to make this happen in all its surroundings (school, family ...).
  • Practice of some sport or physical activity, very important in the school environment but also (and above all) family.
  • Participation in school / social clubs or volunteering, for somewhat older children.
  • Normal-high intelligence level.

As we can see, most points are closely related to the improvement of the self-esteem of the little ones, to which we have dedicated an important space.

In any case, next to these factors that can protect against childhood depression remember the importance of timely detection of any symptoms that make us suspect possible problems to consult with the specialist.
