Always running, jumping, exploring: how to avoid oral accidents in children

It is clear that no one would like their child to have a tooth broken or a tooth left or their gums or tongue injured due to trauma, but Do we do everything possible to avoid mouth accidents?

Sometimes we sin too much in prevention and at other times adults (either because of carelessness, or because of overconfidence) are not aware of many risk situations that take place during childhood. The sharp edges, the carpets, the stairs, the "reckless" game ... are often the cause of oral injuries, as they cause falls or the traumatic outcome of these.

When we talk about accidents, an uncontrollable and non-avoidable part always comes into play, but there are many more or less simple gestures that will ensure the safety of children. Here we leave you some tips on how to avoid accidents in the mouth, which can save us some fright and even some visit to the ER.

Tips for children not to damage their mouths

  • It is mandatory to use age-appropriate child restraint systems, choosing the right group, and placing children well held in them.

  • If children ride passengers on the bicycle, remember that there are chairs specially designed for bicycles.

  • As a passenger or as a "pilot", the child riding a bicycle must wear a helmet and the appropriate protection systems to ride safely.

  • The park can be a dangerous place if we do not watch the children: we must not leave them without supervision and we must ensure that each swing is suitable for the child's age.

  • Any unknown "playground" must be inspected before letting the child explore it, to avoid possible dangers (sharp surfaces, dangerous edges, splinters in furniture ...).

  • Especially if the child is starting to walk, extreme safety must be prepared, the house prepared by removing dangerous edges or carpets, and the child closely watched at all times (also in the street) to prevent bumps on hard surfaces.

  • Mouth guards They prevent damage to the teeth, cheeks and gums when practicing activities such as contact sports, skating, cycling ... Especially if there is a previous injury to take care of, its use is advisable.

  • The pool is a very fun but potentially dangerous place, so you have to continuously monitor children for safety and avoid running around the pool or jumping or playing recklessly near the edge.

  • The family home is usually a great source of accidents. Let's make sure we have safe stairs, protect sharp edges and corners and not leave small objects, toys or cables that can be put in the mouth within reach of children.

  • Check toys that are designed or not to bite often, as young children explore through the mouth and could be harmed by worn or broken toys.

  • The walkers are frequent source of accidents and injuries in the mouth (among others), reason why they are advised against: they are useless and dangerous.

  • If there has been a dental injury, it is important to follow up on it, although it seems to us that they are not important or that it has already been resolved, since it prevents the occurrence of possible complications such as abscesses or infections, fistulas or changes in color of teeth…

Hopefully we do not have to find any of them, but the chances of more common dental injuries in a face trauma are: bleeding gums, dental fractures and dental avulsion or complete eviction of the tooth.

We hope that with these tips to avoid oral accidents in children Let's not face such injuries that need special care and check-ups. Some injuries could even lead to subsequent aesthetic and health problems if not treated properly.
